Training at Aikido of Ramapo Valley
General Aikido training: Our classes cover a wide range of techniques, Aikido fundamentals, and related exercises. This includes correct posture and basic footwork, executing a proper attack, learning how to fall and roll safely, basic techniques, and the cultivation of an optimal connection with the training partner.
Aiki – Weapons: Aikido techniques and principles of movement have roots in classic Japanese weapons used by the samurai in warfare. These martial art forms have been modified over the years and are practiced in order to enhance and deepen the student’s understanding of Aikido. Our weapons’ training includes Bokken (wooden sword), Jyo (wooden staff) and Tanto (wooden knife). The practice consists of individual exercises known as suburi and kata, partner practice (kumi jyo & kumi tachi), and weapon disarming (tachi tori, jyo tori, tanto tori).
Zazen: Zazen is the practice of sitting meditation in the Zen tradition. The practice of Zen emphasizes direct experience rather than seeing reality through the veil of our conceptual mind. The core of this practice is meditation and mindful living. Practicing Zazen regularly and cultivating awareness will have a great impact on the martial-art training, and can help the student understand how to apply Aikido principles to everyday life. Our Eiryu-ji Zen Sangha offers a an option to practice in a community and to study Zen under the direction of Roshi Eran Junryu Vardi. Students at Aikido of Ramapo Valley are encouraged to incorporate regular Zazen with their martial arts training.
We currently offer Zazen sessions on zoom every weekday morning at 6:30 – 7:00, an in-person/zoom hybrid practice on Sundays from 8:00 to 11:00, and an introduction to Zazen (by request). We also hold monthly all-day meditation events, and Sesshins (retreats) at Dai Bosatsu Monastery.
