Class Description

Please note that Beginners are welcome to attend any class, and are given personal instruction and guidance by a senior student throughout the practice.

Aikido: This class covers a wide range of techniques, Aikido fundamentals, and related exercises. This includes correct posture and basic footwork, executing a proper attack, learning how to fall and roll safely, basic techniques, and the cultivation of an optimal connection with the training partner. Open for students of all levels

Free Style: This class is by invitation of the chief instructor, based on the student’s proficiency level.

Weapons: Aikido techniques and principles of movement have roots in classic Japanese weapons used by the samurai in warfare. These martial art forms have been modified over the years and are practiced in order to enhance and deepen the student’s understanding of Aikido. Our weapons’ training includes Bokken (wooden sword), Jyo (wooden staff) and Tanto (wooden knife). The practice consists of individual exercises know as suburi and kata, partner practice (kumi jyo & kumi tachi), and weapon disarming (tachi tori, jyo tori, tanto tori).

Zazen: Zazen is the practice of Zen meditation and it is an integrated part of training at Aikido of Ramapo Valley. The practice of Zen emphasizes direct experience rather than seeing through the veil of our thoughts. The core of this practice is meditation and mindful living. Practicing Zazen regularly and cultivating awareness will have a great impact on the martial-art training, and can help the student understand how to apply Aikido principles to everyday life. For those who wish to focus on the study of Zen, we offer  different training paths under the direction of Eran Junryu Vardi Sensei, a lineage holding Zen teacher.
